75 years of legalized gambling

Las Vegas celebrates 75 year of legalized gambling this year. Nevada legalized gambling on March 19, 1931 to boost tourism and to replace the tax base lost when the silver mining business went south.

At first gaming took place in small establishments and saloons downtown but in 1941 the first Las Vegas strip hotel opened its doors, the El Rancho Vegas. It was soon to be followed by the Last Frontier and the Desert Inn.

Beautifully decorated resort hotels and gambling casinos featuring top-name entertainment as we know them today came into existence after World War II. Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo in 1946 and in 1951 the Gaming Board was created.

Topless Showgirls debut on the Strip with "Minsky's Follies" in 1957 and in 1959 Betty Willis created the famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign. During the 1960's Howard Hughes starts the "corporate takeover" of the Strip, new casinos where built and the existing properties where bought removing...
